Founded in 1541 on the banks of Mapocho River, Santiago has been the capital city since colonial times.
The Chilean executive and judicial powers are located in Santiago, but Congress meets in nearby Valparaíso, the third largest metropolitan area in the country located about 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Santiago
